Official: Turkish club Besiktas sign former Real Madrid midfielder Guti on a two-year deal

Besiktas have signed former Real Madrid midfielder Guti on a free transfer, the Turkish club revealed in a club statement on Monday. The 33-year-old has signed a two-year contract with his annual wages set at €2.7 million (£2.25m).

Guti announced his departure from the Spanish club on Sunday afternoon. The Torrejon-born player was drafted in the Madrid set-up when he was just nine years of age and made his debut for los Blancos in December 1995. However, the playmaker could never fulfill his promise at the Bernabeu and with the club entering a new era under Jose Mourinho, both Madrid and Guti decided that it would be in the best interest of both parties to part company. The departure was confirmed in a press conference on Sunday. Spanish media had already claimed that Guti had a lucrative offer from Besiktas and the Turkish club has now formally confirmed on their official website that the three-time Champions League winner has joined the Istanbul outfit on a free transfer, where he will reunite with former coach Bernd Schuster. Besiktas finished fourth in the Turkcell Super Lig in 2009-10 and will face Czech side FC Viktoria Plzeƈ in the first-leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie on Thursday.
